Shiva nataraj dances his cosmic dance with four arms in a wreath of fire. This dance is seen as a symbol for the eternal movement of the universe: creation, conservation/protection and destruction.
He holds a little drum in one of his right hands, the metaphor for sound and rhythm, the source of creation. With his other right hand he makes a protective gesture, the abhaya mudra. In his left hand he holds a flame (destruction).
The wreath of fire around Shiva is the symbol for the holy mantra Aum, the primal sound of creation.
